FIRE KOOP RADIO (Mary's ex-apt. building)
Click the link (on the title of this post) to see a news video report about my apartment building catching fire. A drunk neighbor of mine fell asleep with a cigarette. His apartment was stacked high with old newspapers, serving as a big giant dwelling-o-kindling. I do believe that it is in this video that they mention a girl who "made her own way to the roof in her pajamas". Make no mistake about it, that girl was me. I was, however, not wearing pajamas. Being awoken from a deep sleep unable to breathe I escaped in what I had been wearing in bed, which happened to be a little LESS than pjs if you get what I'm saying. I must have been breathing in smoke for quite sometime when I woke to realize what was happening. My instinct told me to go out the window and that my time was extremely limited. I crawled out the window and onto the roof of an adjacent building. I shouted at the patrons of Maggie Mae's (a bar on 6th street) across the alley that I needed "HELP!" and that "my dog is still inside!" Officer ORORSKI of the APD grabbed a ladder from a bar and helped my naked ass down. Thanks Mr. 5.0.
My clothes and other "stuff" is severely smoke damaged and ...
my favorite companion in the whole world was the only casualty in the fire.
Karma.
my lil doggy.
I am preparing a memorial for her which will take place sometime in the near future at her and my special spot on Town Lake here in Austin, Texas.
It has been about two weeks since the fire, and I'm just rolling through a daze of grief. I say that, but, I'd like to think that my perspective on the whole thing has been pretty optimistic. I am taking this as a sign of, well, SOMETHING GOOD to come.
